Ramsay 2022_roy_headshot 2

Dr. Avik Roy, PhD, (Principal Investigator), is a neuroscientist, entrepreneur, and professor. He is a Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Simmaron Research INC and an Adjunct Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His primary research interest is to comprehend the molecular mechanisms of neurodegenerative and neuroinflammatory diseases. Designing small molecular drugs, understanding protein-ligand interaction, and application of drugs in animal models are his areas of expertise.

Avik received multiple prestigious awards and patents for his contributions to neurodegenerative diseases. Avik received the Rapid Response Innovation award in Parkinson’s disease by the MJFox foundation, the John E Trufant award for excellence in research by Rush University, and the YIEE award by the American society for neurochemistry. Avik also received multiple patents on designing a novel nasal drug (KeptideTM) for COVID-19, identifying novel endogenous regulators of hippocampal memory, and discovering small molecular drugs in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.

Study Summary

Simmaron R & D lab is developing an animal model to explore the molecular mechanism of ME/CFS. Dr. Roy will investigate how autophagy impairment contributes to the pathogenesis of ME/CFS. His research has identified that the functional inactivation of early autophagy protein ATG13 is a potential contributor to ME/CFS pathogenesis. To prove that mechanism, his group will study if the genetic ablation of ATG13 gene might display post-exertional malaise (PEM) pathology in mice.

If the study is successful, it will help to establish the link between autophagy impairment and ME/CFS pathogenesis. The animal model not only helps to understand the molecular mechanism of ME/CFS, but also serves as an important tool for drug discovery.
