Solve Catalyst Awardee News: Simmaron Research Secures $780K NIH Award to Advance ME/CFS Research

Solve’s Ramsay Research Grants and ME/CFS Catalyst Award programs have achieved an impressive 66x return on investment, demonstrating the power of strategic funding to advance ME/CFS and Long Covid research and attract significant follow-on support.

And the latest success is worth celebrating: Simmaron Research has secured a multi-year $780,000 NIH R01 grant, building on research previously co-funded by Solve. The grant will support Simmaron’s studies seeking to map mTOR dysfunction and its central role in ME/CFS.

This work builds upon Dr. Avik Roy’s 2022 Ramsay Grant-winning study of how symptoms of ME/CFS relate to problems with autophagy, and Simmaron’s 2025 Solve ME/CFS Catalyst Award-winning study, “Low Dose Rapamycin in ME/CFS, Long-COVID, and Other Infection Associated Chronic Conditions,” advancing an FDA-approved drug for reducing key symptoms of ME/CFS and Long Covid, and tracking powerful biomarkers to identify which people are likely to respond to treatment.

Drs. Gottschalk and Roy told us, “New science takes a lot of investigation before NIH will award R-01 grants. We’re grateful for the Ramsay and Catalyst grants from Solve M.E., as well as our donors’ generosity, that sustained our work on mTOR’s role in ME and PEM. We’re excited to bring new science and NIH funds to ME.”

Congratulations to Dr. Gottschalk, Dr. Roy, and the Simmaron Research team!
