XMRV Tests in Italy

Results of PCR testing of samples from 12 consecutive CFS patients and 40 controls (10 with HIV, 10 transplant patients, 10 with hepatitis C, 10 healthy individuals) for XMRV and polytropic MLVs show that two of the CFS patients tested positive, although the authors report that “the positivity could not be confirmed by the amplification of a different virus gene.” None of the controls tested positive. They conclude, “while it appears established that XMRV/MLV sequences are not detectable in a significant proportion of CFS patients, the frequency and the role of evolutionary relic retrovirus sequences potentially detectable in the human chromatin remain to be further elucidated.” (New Microbiologica, July 31, 2012)
